Moi International Airport serves the city of Mombasa and surrounding communities. It is the second-largest and second-busiest airport in Kenya, behind Jomo Kenyatta International Airport located in the capital city of Nairobi. Mombasa Airport is operated by Kenya Airports Authority. The airport was named after former Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi during his tenure.
Major Airlines flying to Mombasa are Kenya Airways, KLM and less well known Ethiopian Airlines and Turkish Airlines. Mombasa is steeped in history, easily accessible by air both from domestic airports in Kenya, from Nairobi and from overseas. The East Coast of Africa is full of historic monuments; Fort Jesus. Mombasa is East Africa's largest port and Kenya's main tourist hub. Located in the southeastern part of Kenya, Mombasa is one of the most significant towns of this area - as a major tourist destination. It is also well known for its imports and exports through its port. Mombasa's biggest market is the Makupa Market off Mwembe Tayari - a colourful place featuring a wide range of produce that is well worth a visit. Mombasa Island is a good place pick up souvenirs, especially cheap fabrics, like 'kanga' wraparounds.
